I am deeply saddened by the fact that Nigeria has through its lawmakers chosen to criminalize love between two people of the same sex. I was born and raised in Nigeria and sadly I know of MANY people of all ages who have practically lived in the closet for most of their lives.
This new law however takes it a step further and I imagine would drive countless Nigerians further into secrecy and fear: Fear of expressing in the least who they are or showing affection or expressing love as they feel or perceive it!
The collective moral hypocrisy which is belted out from the ''highgrounds'' of faith and pulpit is at best a travesty of truth as it always ignores the need to address the audacious daily catalogs of injustice to women, children, the poor and the dispossessed. I always chuckle to myself when I hear people talk about Nigeria being a moral or Christian nation.
The truth is we have brothers, sisters, uncles and aunts, nephews, sons and daughters and even fathers and mothers who have struggled with their sexuality and this will only succeed in driving people further into the closet or force them to leave Nigeria and seek life in a place where they will find freedom to express and live and love as they truly are.
My tears are shed for Nigeria tonight!!
